The work produced by previous students was of a high standard:
After seeing the prospectuses for the course and college in general I decided that this would be the only institution for me, it is also close to home which would allow me to be in the building for much longer, producing more work and learning much more.
The amount of awards won by the course is impressive:
The D and AD prizes says it all.

Ability to teach several disciplines with graphics design:
Learning all forms of graphic design such as use of illustration, typography, target audiences and print process plays a part in how effectively you step into industry, therefore I wanted to be around people who played with techniques and used different processes.
The studio life and culture is open and therefore motivational:
The open days provided a look into how impressive the facilities are:
As mentioned previously, the facilities are important to me as financially I am unable to provide a computer for myself, the open days were crucial to seeing how well equipped the studios were.
Identify and explain 5 things that you want to learn during your time on the programme.
The above link helps to a certain point by giving a satirical viewpoint, however the real nitty gritty details come with experience, I feel that all the tutors and other professionals can help me understand my career path by hearing the stories of theirs. By learning from others mistakes and experiences I should be able to hit the ground running a lot easier than if I go into the industry without having any experience.
Event Display layout design and communicating information specific to certain target audiences:
I would like to develop and awareness of how space can play apart in communicating information in event such as conferences, conventions and business centres etc. Way finding is something that I understand has to be effective without being too artistic and brash. The above image shows that you can play with peoples perception of being lost in a large space and add an element of ease to a space that is overwhelming.
Web design and graphics for web:
My blogger is poor, I would like to HTML code certain aspects of this aswell as be able to work with Indexhibit.

Where graphics is going in the next 20-30 years (holograms, projection etc)
At Level 04, John Watters told us in passing that graphic design is changing and evolving for the better, in area where budgets are getting smaller, certain companies are using this to push beyond their rivals by using new technologies. I have seen small scale evidence of this with the use of digital billboards, touch screen window displays and 3D printing however John Watters described that certain technologies are being used to create holograms and large scale 3D projection to advertise and promote. This excites me as I will no doubt be able to use this technology and I hope to get in at the ground level once I graduate.

Identify and explain 5 skills that you think are your strengths.
Time management / prioritising:
Last year was great for learning how to prioritise effectively and plan into high detail each day, this allows me to not loose track of certain tasks and become cluttered with my memory.
Commitment to the course and my career beyond it:
Photography:
My qualification is Photography has given me some basic skills in juxtaposition and lighting when shooting images of products that I have designed, this came in handy with my self initiated summer beer brief.

Communicating with people outside of the course:
I am continually contacting outside sources and speaking to printers over the phone rather than through email, this builds a confidence that I can make use of when I deal with live briefs and clients.
Planning:
This is similar to the time management however different in terms of which brief I attack first in order of deadline, last year became tricky as I became carried away with many briefs with longer deadlines which compromised the shorter deadlines. I have addressed this and hope to build on it much further.
Identify and explain 5 things that you want to improve.
Illustrator and the speed in which I use it:

I really love this piece I did for a self initiated brief, however it took me a huge amount of time to get it to a stage I was happy with.
Awareness of the industry and what is happening:
Photographing the products I make:
Although I mentioned that I have the basic skills, I would like (I need) to develop these further. I have a goal this year of creating something 3D, such as an Installation, as this will need to be photographed in a studio to produce the final graphic then my photography lighting skills will need to be sharpened.
All elements of hand rendered type:
This piece is a draft of typographical work I am submitting to a live brief which was emailed to all students from within the college, at this stage I hope to be building on my hand rendered type skills and how I can digitally render them which will get the most from my imagination.
Illustration and Drawing/sketching:
Identify and explain 5 ways that you will evaluate your progress.
Blogging:
Track social media reactions to my work:
Over the summer between Level 04 and Level 05, I started to push myself and get some small scale attention from the online blogging community, this worked well as my self initiated brief attracted the attention of hundreds of people. This is of course, no where near my peers such as Sam, Eve or Tom, however it is a start.
Interact with other students independently:
Working with Greta and other students has started to help me push myself and build communication skills, I think that we can effectively explain to each other why something is or is not working. Structured Crits are of course useful, but the little chats, coffee breaks and external crits help even more, as these flow in a less formative way.
Grade feedback:
Compare myself to both the 3rd years and the 1st years work:
In the First year the communication between levels of study was non existent, I hope to be able to talk and crit with other students on other levels to gauge how I am progressing in terms of their thoughts.

Identify 10 examples of design that illustrate your fields of creative interest.
The Alcohol Industry

My interest in this field stems from the surface and mediums which require the graphics. Bottle have a particular printable surface area which needs to be considered when producing a layout for the graphics. Along with the bottles, the designer needs to consider caps, boxes and any shipping collateral that comes with the job.
The Skateboard Industry

I started to become interested in graphic design through the skateboard industry and have wanted to work on projects ever since. As skateboarding is naturally creative it is easy to see why all of the products are so heavily graphic design orientated to make money and appeal to the large target audience.

Towards the end of level 5 and into the summer I started to draw and illustrate objects and people more, I found I didn't enjoy it as much as illustrating type and letter forms so I have begun exploring briefs that allow me to play with type. I am submitting to the Typosgrafe project and creating logo ideas for Level 5 photography students.

Graphics for an Interior commercial space

A full identity sometimes only goes as far as a paper based production, this work outlines my ambition to work on an open space which includes wall coverings, table set ups and interior design. This is an example of how design of a brand stretches outside of Graphic design and into Interior and Architectural design.
