OUGD502 - Typosgrafe submission

It is important to me to discover external creative industries such as the local arts community so I am using one of my Beer Label designs and pushing it further and exploring different product ranges for a submission for a live brief called Typosgrafe which is being run by Level 6 students.

The only thing which was designed originally is the front label with hand rendered type.

The label itself is at a point where I am happy with it, the textures work well and the type is laid out in a legible way with a strong focal point. I do not want however to simply submit this as a photograph of a product featuring type. I believe that creating a full branding series including the 6 bottle carrier, beer mat and possibly other objects such as a tee or bottle opener. As this is a home brew I need to keep it simple.

The type did not fit well in relation to a specific cap height, I made each letter and glyph fit into a rigid ascender height so that the lower case "l" did not size down and look awkwardly placed.

The standard punctuation was too bulky and/or squared off. I wanted to add a softness to the type and therefore used a thin stroke to allow for rounded edges. A new comma was created to fit the sentence flow much smoother.

The completed back label, as this is a home brew only the essential information is needed, no company names or barcodes are present which allowed for a traditional label in a simplistic layout. I wanted a simple shape so that the type was not lost in a elaborate shape of label.

This net was found on an online packaging net resource, I had to trace the jpeg into a vector initially to avoid pixilation and increase the ability to work with the line work.

Using the 3 colours of the labelling including a deep amber orange, the scheme should allow the bottle colour to work in a complimentary way to the large orange space. The overall feel of the product carrier with bottles should give a vibe of summer California warmth.

All the lines need smoothing off so that the type flows without having jagged edge but the overall concept is there in vector form now. Total time so far on poster 3 hours.

A few things here have been tweaked to get the flow of the type smooth, juxtaposition of the author of the quote as well as scale of the type has also been altered to improve impact. 4 hours total time spent on poster.

Further Exposure
Since the exhibition the images have been re-pinned on Pinterest. Although this is small exposure, it is exciting to see work I have produced being admired by others.
