OUGD502 - PPP - Studio visits

Over a period of 2 days I attempted to visit several studios in Nottinghamshire, these were cold calls, something that I felt necessary after being turned away on the phone by every other studio I contacted over the past month.

Only two were of any use, Cubic took the time to see me at the door after I spoke on the intercom, and OneHaus gave me the name of Ross to contact with a PDF of work to set up a visit. The rest were very busy and one gentleman even sounded close to a collapse with the amount of work he had to produce.

The overall experience helped with my confidence over the phone and in person, I got to travel to another city and experience the environments in which the studios operated, I think that quality of studio and location of studio is high on my list of reasons to contact particular places now. I would much rather be working in a financial district or in the countryside such as CDA do.

I have taken the decision to email all the studios I dropped by on to say thank you and also to use the names I got from certain companies.

Studio Output

This visit turned out to be an eye opener of a business rather than the creative hub the studio is. I guess that when I approached the studio I felt as though it was going to be an informal relaxed chat about the process of creating for the younger audiences and working with their client base.

Al, one of the directors sat down in the reception area and explained how the company was structured.

I made several notes and swapped business cards before I left to visit Cubic.

Cubic Studio

This is very promising, I know that I can visit the studio in the coming weeks which allows me to get my final business cards printed and samples of my work printed to perhaps get critiqued. I will contact them in a week to set something up after my COP deadline.

A set of props for my questions of which I asked in detail, this was to allow the conversation to flow onto more specific aspects of design and strategy.

Christian popped out to say bye and offered me this brand book from a few years ago, which was a well received gesture by a busy man working away hard in the back of the office.
Overall, Cubic was a fantastic and positive experience in which I received advice and personal support from both the founder and a creative director.
